On February 24, in Petersburg, the gala ceremony concluding the celebration of the Chopin Year in the north-western Russia took place.

The ceremony was held in the Rimski-Korsakow Petersburg Conservatory, where the jubilee year was inaugurated on March 15, 2010. The ceremony had two parts. The first part took place in the Chamber Room, where the Polish-Russian book by Grzegorz Wiśniewski, titled "Fryderyk Chopin in the Eyes of Russians" (pl. "Fryderyk Chopin w oczach Rosjan") (PIW 2010) was presented. The book is a collection of interviews with outstanding representatives of Russian culture (among others Tołstoj, Bałakiriew, Pasternak, Achmatowa, Szczedrin). This collection of essays and comments by the icons of Russian music and literature has triggered much interest especially among music history experts, for whom it became a perfect source for presenting the Russian perception of Chopin in the space of 200 years.

The second part of the evening took place in the Głazunow Room. An outstanding Polish pianist Janusz Olejniczak delivered a Chopin concert. Apart from unusually rich solo programme, the maestro performed the Piano Concerto in F minor by Fryderyk Chopin accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of the Petersburg Conservatory conducted by Maksim Aleksiejew. The audience which filled the room to its full capacity was delighted with the virtuosity of Janusz Olejniczak, who was called for encore two times.

Before the concert started, the Ambassador in Russia, Mr. Wojciech Zajączkowski thanked the Petersburg citizens for their commitment to the celebrations of the jubilee year and presented plaques for special commitment to celebrations of the 200th anniversary of Frydreyk Chopin’s birth to five directors of music institutions. Apart from the Petersburg Conservatory the plaques were also presented to the M. Musorgski Music College, S. Rachmaninow School of Fine Arts, Chopin Society in Petersburg and the International Music Festival "Petersburg Palaces".
