Chopin in Kenya

In the framework of the project "Chopin in Africa" the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Nairobi in cooperation with the CHOPIN 2010 Celebrations Office invited two Polish pianists to deliver concerts in the capital of Kenya.

Mateusz Kołakowski, young jazz pianist arrived in Kenya on the 15th of November. During his stay (5 days) he performed two concerts. The first was open to broad public and it took place in the Institute of French Culture "Alliance Française" on November 16. The room’s capacity was 200 seats, but the number of listeners was far beyond this limit. A number of people, including students, listened to the concert irrespective of discomfort. The concert turned out to be a great success and it ended with several encores. The second performance took place on November 18 in the residence of the Ambassador, Mrs. Anna Grupińska. 85 guests participated in the concert, among others Geoff Tooth, Australian High Commissioner to Nigeria, doctor Chijioke Wigwe and Christian Hasenbichler, the Ambassador of Austria. Both performances covered similar programme divided into two parts: jazz interpretations of Chopin music with the pianist’s own compositions, and standard jazz music.

Janusz Olejniczak, an outstanding interpreter of Chopin music was the second Polish pianist who visited Kenya this year. During his stay in Nairobi (December 15-21) he was accompanied by Waldemar Dąbrowski the Chairman of the CHOPIN 2010 Celebrations Committee. The main concert took place on December 16 and it was open to broad public. Its motto was "Christmas gift from Poland to Kenya". Over 500 guests came to the Nairobi National Theatre. There were ambassadors and representatives of the cultural milieu together with a number of Kenya citizens. The performance by the Polish pianist’s was highly appreciated and it concluded with several encores. The concert was covered by Media, including CitizenTV (the fastest growing Kenya national television station broadcasting in Swahili and in English). Interviews were delivered by Mrs. Ambassador Anna Grupińska, Janusz Olejniczak and Waldemar Dąbrowski.
