On 8th–10th May 2009 the Chopin Centre in Szafarnia, Poland, hosted the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Young People.

On 8th-10th May 2009 the Chopin Centre in Szafarnia, Poland, hosted the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Young People. The competition is addressed to young pianists from Poland and abroad. To mark the end of the competition, an open-air piano recital took place, as part of the "Chopin has come" project.

This year's edition of the competition was held under the patronage of Bogdan Zdrojewski, Polandąs Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Piotr Całbecki, Marshal of the Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province and Angel Tellechea, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Poland in Pampeluna.

Twenty-three pianists from Poland, Russia and Ukraine took part in the auditions, divided into three age categories. Their performances were assessed by a professional jury formed by professors of Polish Academies of Music.

The Jury: Professor Maria Murawska (rektor of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, chair), Professor Andrzej Tatarski (Academy of Music in Poznań) and Professor Grzegorz Kurzyński (Academy of Music in Wrocław).

The following prizes and distinctions were awarded:

The 9 -11 age category:
1st Prize - Piotr Pawlak - Gdańsk, Poland
2nd Prize - Tymoteusz Śleziak - Bielsko Biała, Poland
3rd Prize - Czerniajewa Łata - Kaliningrad, Russia

Gabriela Sęk-Mastej - Warsaw, Poland
Jurij Zielenin - Kiev, Ukraine
Anna Bednarczuk - Warsaw, Poland
Iwan Toropov - Kaliningrad, Russia

The 12 - 14 age category:
1st Prize - Aleksandra Hortensja Dąbek - Krzeszowice, Poland
2nd Prize - Elizaweta Nazaruk - Kaliningrad, Russia
3rd Prize - Natalia Karolina Zaleska - Gdańsk, Poland
Julia Marczuk - Warsaw, Poland

The 15 -18 age category:
1st Prize - Daria Kochetkowa - Kaliningrad, Russia
2nd Prize - Łukasz Krupiński - Warsaw, Poland
3rd Prize - Dorota Demidowicz - Bydgoszcz, Poland

Apart from the standard awards envisaged by the competition's rules and regulations, the Jury also granted special awards of the Görgy Ferenc Foundation in Budapest. (awards for the best performance of the mazurkas went to: Piotr Pawlak, Elizaveta Nazaruk and Łukasz Krupiński, and the award for the best foreign contestant to Daria Kochetkowa).
