Coming up soon: All About Chopin competition

Friday, September 10th, is the deadline for registering to take part in the great test on Fryderyk Chopin taking place in Katowice, Poland, on October 16th and 17th. Prize-winners of any previous competitions testing the knowledge about Chopin and his work are exempted from the preliminary exam.

To register, you need to fill in the special form on the competition’s website www.chopin-katowice.pl, which is available in 10 languages and additionally contains information about the competition’s rules and regulations, prizes and organisational matters.

All About Chopin in an initiative conceived by the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra of Katowice to mark the composer’s 100th birthday this year. The project is being developed by the Krystyna Bochenek Katowice Centre of Culture, the Chopin 2010 Office and the Fryderyk Chopin Institute in Warsaw.

The test is open to all participants aged 16 and above, regardless of nationality, who are not musicologists, Chopin scholars, or have not authored any university thesis, dissertation, academic paper or popular science work about Fryderyk Chopin.  Non-Polish speakers will be assisted by interpreters.

The winner of the All About Chopin competition will receive 35 thousand Polish zloty in prize money (around 8.8 thousand euro), the second-prize winner – 10 thousand Polish zloty (around 2.5 thousand euro) and the third-prize winner – 5 thousand Polish zloty (around 1.2 thousand euro).

The competition will be divided into three rounds. The first two will consist in written tests, while in the final round the 10 best contestants will be providing their answers orally in front of the audience. They will be shown fragments of films about Chopin, newsreels, coverage from past Chopin competitions, famous pianists' archive performances, and iconography. The final will also feature live performances from renowned Chopin interpreters.

The contest will be held at the same time as the third round of the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Directly after the awards ceremony and the gala concert from the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra of Katowice, the three prize-winners will travel to the Polish capital to witness the pianists’ endeavours.
