Anna Kostrzyńska – soprano

The last concert in the Musical Thursdays series at Kordegarda Chopin 2010 will feature Japan’s pianist Ai Kaykawa.

The recital’s programme will include:

• Ballade in A-flat major Op. 47
• Nocturne in D-flat major Op. 27 No. 2
• Waltzes Op. 64 No. 1 in D-flat major and C-sharp minor No. 2
• Scherzo in C-sharp minor Op. 39
• Mazurkas Op. 24 in G minor No. 1 and in C major No. 2
• Ballade in F minor Op. 52

Ai Kayukawa was born in Gifu, Japan in 1984. In 2002 she completed with honours the music course at the Kano high school with Kazuo Nagano and Shozo Tsubota. In 2008 she graduated from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, where she studied with Koichi Yamashiro, Minako Mitsui, Kikuko Ogura (fortepiano). She has further honed her piano skills and musical interpretation under  the late Halina Czerny-Stefanska, Boris Petrushansky (Imola Master Classes), Klaus Schilde and Vera Gornostaeva (Weimar Master Classes, summer of 2009). At present, she is a postgraduate student at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, under the tutelage of Ewa Pobłocka. 

She received a scholarship for young promising pianists taking part in the Weimar Master Classes (2009).

Ai Kayukawa has won the following competition prizes: 1st prize in the 1998 Yamaha Piano Festival competition; 1st prize in the 2003 JPTA competition; 3rd prize (the 1st prize was not awarded ) in the 2007 Rosenstock Internatinal Piano Competition; 1st prize in the 14th Japan Mozart Music Competition in 2009; 1st prize in the 4th EUTERPE International Piano Competition in Italy in 2010. 

She has performed as a soloist and chamber music player in Japan, Italy, Germany and Poland.

Joanna Maklakiewicz will make an appearance this week at Kordegarda Chopin 2010’s Musical Thursday concert.

Joanna  Maklakiewicz was born into the renowned family of Polish artists. She completed the prestigious The Gnessin State Musical College in Moscow, having studied piano under Professor Vladimir Bochkarev.  From 1991 to 1996 she studied piano under the direction of Andrzej Stefański and Alicja Paleta-Bugaj, as well as piano chamber music with Professor Krystyna Borucińska at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. In 1999, Ms Maklakiewicz completed the Postgraduate Course in Performing Contemporary Music in piano under Professor Szabolcs Esztényi. Already during her studies she received many awards and distinctions, such as those of the Fryderyk Chopin Society in Warsaw, Poland’s Ministry of Art and Culture, or the mayor of Warsaw. After her graduation, she won the 1997 TIM International Piano Tournament in Turin in the piano duo category. In her endeavours Ms Maklakiewicz has been supported by Fundacja Kultury (Culture Foundation) and the Stefan Batory Foundation.

Currently, Ms Maklakiewicz is teaching piano chamber music, cooperating with Professor Krystyna Borucińska at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw and is the head of the Piano Section at the Fryderyk Chopin Schools of Music in Warsaw. She has performed in numerous cities in Europe, the USA and Japan, and worked with many outstanding musicians, most of all her husband, Piotr Janowski. She has also made recordings for the radio and television, released three solo albums in Japan and made recordings of contemporary music with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra and Sinfonia Varsovia. She also performed the Goldberg Variations for Waldemar Dziki’s film Salwarus and the Fuga Canonica from Bach’s Musikalisches Opfer for the film Drugi po Boy'u (Second after Boy) about Maciej Słomczyński. She also acted as music consultant to Andrzej Żuławski on the staging Stanisław Moniuszko’s opera Straszny Dwór (The Haunted Manor). She is a member of the European Society of Culture.

On August 19th, 2010, Kordegarda Chopin 2010 is presenting a concert from pianist Lena Ledoff, who will play compositions by Chopin in both classical and jazz arrangements. The concert is held as part of the Musical Thursdays series. 

Lena Ledoff is a pianist and composer. Born in Saint Petersburg, she graduated from the piano department at the Academy of Music in Voronezh, where she had studied under Professor T. Gaponienko. In 1988 – 1994 she was accompanist and jazz lecturer at the Yanka Kupala University in Belarus.  Since 1994 she has been residing in Poland. Also in 1994 she claimed the Grand Prix of the International Modern Choreography Festival in Vitebsk for her music to Dimitri Kurakulov’s ballet.  In 2000 she set up the Lena Ledoff Trio, who has been performing in Poland and abroad ever since. Currently, Lena Ledoff  is focusing on her solo projects, mostly the Komeda – Chopin – Komeda programme.

Lena Ledoff has recorded 4 albums: “Wish” (reworkings of compositions by Chopin, Szymanowski and Piazzolli for jazz trio), “Pocałunek na mrozie” (reworkings of Russian film songs for jazz quartet and soloists), “Lena Ledoff solo” (jazz arrangements of F. Chopin’s compositions) and “Komeda – Chopin – Komeda”. Ms Ledoff has performed at numerous music festivals at home and abroad, including in Bratislava, Lviv, Berlin, Kharkiv, Gdańsk, Poznań, Olsztyn or Szczecin), and has worked with a range of Warsaw’s theatres, including Rozmaitości and Studio, to create the musical setting for their stage plays. In 2010 she was awarded an artistic fellowship from the Mayor of Warsaw.

Szczepan Kończal graduated last year from the Józef Stompel Academy of Music in Katowice with the top result in his class and was awarded the Primus Inter Pares medal.

He may boast many successes at prestigious international piano competitions, including Tbilisi (3rd prize, 2009), Pretoria (6^th prize, 2008), being the first Polish prize-winner in the history of either of the competitions, the Vianna da Motta Competition in Lisbon (5^th prize and the special prize, 2007), Milan (1^st prize and the special prize, 2010), Campillos (3^rd  prize, 2009), the Grieg Competition in Oslo (2^nd prize and two special prizes, 2008), Takasaki (2^nd prize, 2001). Mr Kończal was also finalist of the 2006 Tallinn Competition and semi-finalist at the 2005 Chopin Competition in Warsaw. He has been thrice prize-winner of the Polish National Chopin Competition. Preceding that, he had won a number of piano competitions for young pianists (Antonin, Zabrze, Siedlce, Poznań, Gorzów Wielkopolski, Stalowa Wola). 

Mr Kończał has performed with Sinfonia Varsovia, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Orquestra Gulbenkian, and cooperated with Antoni Wit, Tadeusz Strugała, Jerzy Swoboda, Michał Klauza, Andres Mustonen, Arjan Tien, or Peter Csaba.

He received six scholarships from Poland’s culture minister, has been beneficiary of the scholarship programme “Młoda Polska” [Young Poland], and won scholarships from Poland’s Prima Minister, The Kołłątaj Foundation, and the Polish Children’s Fund.

Michał Pietrzak was educated at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw and L'École Normal de Musique Alfred Cortot in Paris. He studied with Paweł Kamiński, Professor Maja Nosowska, Professor Piotr Paleczny, Professor Jacques Lagarde and Professor Monique Mercier. In 1999-2004 he completed master classes run by Alicja Paleta-Bugaj, Ewa Pobłocka, Peter Eicher, Vladimir Krainev and John O'Conor.

Mr Pietrzak has achieved many successes at competitions and festivals, including the 1^st prize at the 6^th International Piano Competition “Arthur Rubinstein in memoriam” (Bydgoszcz, Poland 2004);  twice the 1^st prize at Concorso Internazionale di Musica Pietro Argento (Italy) in 2006 as soloist and in 2009 performing in duo with singer Małgorzata Szymańska. Mr Pietrzak was also finalist of the 2^nd International SEILER Piano Competition in Kitzingen, Germany (2001) and semifinalist at the 2001 International Piano Competition in San Sebastian, Spain. He gave solo performances at music festivals in Poland, Ukraine, Tunisia, France and Austria.

Aleksandra Soboń is a pianist and chamber music player educated at the Fryderyk Chopin University in Warsaw, Poland, where she studied piano with Professor Jerzy Romaniuk and Ramiro Sanjines, and piano chamber music with Professor Krystyna Borucińska and Joanna Maklakiewicz, which she completed with honours. Together with her trio, Ms Soboń has won the second prize at the 13^th International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music in Kraków, Poland, and honourable mentions at the Mazovia Chopin Auditions. 

Ms Soboń’s greatest passion is piano chamber music. In 2005 she made a debut in the Warsaw Philharmonic Hall. She completed a number of master classes, studying with such prominent artists as Jan Krzysztof Broja, Edward Auer, or Anne Queffélec. She performed the world premiere of Anna Ignatowicz-Glińska’s Znaki Magiczne (Magic Signs). Ms Soboń is currently begining a postgraduate piano programme with Professor Einar Steen-Nøkleberg at the Norwegian Academy of Music in Oslo. 

Jan Stokłosa is a cellist and final year student at the Fryderyk Chopin University in Warsaw, where he studies cello with Piotr Hausenplas. Before going to university, he had completed 12 years of music education at the Karol Szymanowski School of Music in Warsaw, which he finished with a diploma in the cello under the direction of Professor Kazimierz Michalik. 

Mr Stokłosa has many times participated in the International Music Classes in Łańcut, Poland, and the Summer String Academies in Goch, Germany, where he worked with such professors as Claus Reichard or Andrzej Orkisz. He has also claimed a number of prizes, both as solo performer and as part of chamber ensembles, including first prize at the District Cello Competition in Warsaw (2000), a honourable mention at the Polish National Auditions of Chamber Ensembles in Łódź (2000), the third prize in the Polish National Auditions of Cello and Double Bass Students of Primary and Secondary Schools of Music in Łódź (2004), and the second prize in the 13^th International Competition of Contemporary Chamber Music in Kraków (2009) together with the Loco Trio. Since 2007, Mr Stokłosa has been member of the Fair Play quartet, which focuses on studio recording. The quartet has performed the music to Michał Kwieciński’s film Jutro pojdziemy do kina (Tomorrow we’ll go to the movies). In September 2008 Jan Stokłosa joined the Polish Orchestra Sinfonia Varsovia.

Michał Jacek Kozłowski is studying the piano at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw under Professor Piotr Paleczny. He has claimed a range of top prizes in different Polish and international competitions, such as the 9^th Darmstadt International Chopin Piano Competition (Germany, 2009), Polish National Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw (Poland, 2008), 5^th Polish National Piano Competition “The Young Interpret Chopin” in Konin (Poland, 2008), 6^th International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in Narva (Estonia, 2006). In 2008 Mr Kozłowski qualified to the national heat of the Eurovision Young Musicians.

Mr Kozłowski has also furthered his skills participating in master classes by such renowned professors as Dang Thai Son, Andrzej Jasiński, Oleg Meisenberg, Matti Reakallio, Joaquin Soriano, Tamas Ungar, Olga Rusina, Irena Kutin, Anne Queffelec and others. His achievements have been honoured with scholarships from the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the governor of Poland’s Pomerania province and the Mayor of the city of Gdańsk. During 2004–2008 he was also beneficiary of the Polish Children’s Fund scholarship programme.

Przemysław Lechowski was educated at the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, following which he completed a postgraduate piano programme at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw.

His awards and distinctions include: Gold Medal in the Chopin category at the 13^th Brest Piano Competition (Brest, France, 2008), First Prize in Concours Musical de France (Paris, France, 2006), Honourable Mention at the 5^th International Karol Szymanowski Competition (Łódź, Poland, 2001), Second Prize in the Polish National I. J. Paderewski Competition (Wodziasław, Poland, 1995).

Mr Lechowski has been performing in Poland and France. In March 2009 he was the first Polish artist to perform at Paris’ new cultural centre Collège des Bernardins, opened on September 12^th, 2008 by pope Benedict XVI. 

In 2010 he was among the organisers and performers of The Longest Birthday piano marathon in Warsaw.

Przemysław Lechowski also sits on juries of Polish and international piano competitions. In 2010 he was the deputy chairman of the First Siberian International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Tomsk, Russia, which he opened with his recital.

Each Thursday from July 8th to September 9th, at 6:30 p.m., Kordegarda Chopin 2010 presents Chopin concerts. The first to come is a recital from Wojciech Świętoński.

Wojciech Świętoński was educated at the Fryderyk Chopin Academy in Warsaw, where he studied the piano under Professor Bronisława Kawalla and piano chamber music under Professor Jerzy Marchwiński. He went on to further develop his knowledge and skills completing an artistic traineeship in piano chamber music with Professor Krystyna Borucińska. He claimed top awards at the international piano competitions in Kiev and Rome and gave performances in Lithuania, Ukraine and Italy, along with numerous Polish towns and cities. He worked together with such superb conductors as Monika Wolińska, Grzegorz Mielimąka, or Szymon Kawalla. Already in the third year of his studies, he joined the Polish Musicians Association (SPAM) and the Artists Association (STOART). During 2006–2008 he was holding a scholarship from the Lions Club Warszawa NIKE.

Mr Świętoński has cooperated with the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Polish radio Orchestra, the Polish National Opera and the Embassy of Finland to Poland. His concert opened Warsaw’s Schuman Parade, while the release of an album on which he cooperated concluded the celebrations of the Zbigniew Herbert Year. He was among the three Poles chosen to participate in Ivo  Pogorelic’s Piano Master Classes.

From June 11th to 13th, 2010, Kordegarda Chopin 2010 is presenting Iwo Zaniewski’s painting “Nokturn” (Nocturne) drawing inspiration from the atmospheric music of Fryderyk Chopin.

Znaniewski’s paintings are representative pieces adopting a special approach to composition. Any change to the formal arrangement would break down the structural coherency and unbalance the composition. The key to the paintings’ reception are their visual attributes.

Every day from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. during the time the painting is exhibited you may listen to Polish and foreign pianist play Chopin at Kordegarda. Each of the concerts features nocturnes – the project’s central theme.

Iwo Zaniewski is a painter, photographer, screen writer and film director. He is artistic director with advertising agency Przybora. Zaniewski. Ltd. (PZL). In 1976 – 1981 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. Up until mid-1980s, the main focus of his work was painting, then he also embraced advertising and photography. The project NOCTURNES. IWO ZNIEWSKI AND PIANISTS is held in collaboration with the advertising agency PZL and the Smolna Street Residents’ Association (Stowarzyszenie Mieszkańców Ulicy Smolnej).
