Interview with Yulianna Avdeeva, the 1st prize winner in the 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, made during the final auditions.
Do you remember your first contact with Chopin’s music?
I have fallen in love with Chopin as a small girl. His Nocturne in E major which I was taught to play, made tremendous impression on me.
When you play Chopin, is it still strong emotional experience for you?
Chopin’s music is unfathomable. When I have been practicing for the Competition I listened to various recordings of great Chopin pianist. In the consecutive stages of the Competition I have also listened to other participants who performed after me. (Never to those before me). I am fascinated with the fact that each of us interprets his music in a different way. When I become conscious of this phenomenon I know that I will never get bored with Chopin.
How do you assess your performances compared to those of other participants?
I have never been satisfied with myself, especially in the 3rd Stage. I know myself and I know which parts I could have played better. There is always something I would like to improve in my performance. Many excellent pianists have come for the Competition in Warsaw, and competing with them mobilizes me very much. However, after each performance I experienced a very pleasant feeling. I think it is due to the audience which was unusually friendly and attentive. I love to play the piano in this Hall.
How do you feel in Warsaw?
I love Warsaw, especially Śródmieście district. There are so many places which remember Chopin: monuments, commemoration plaques. Every step brings his presence out.
Have you already visited the Fryderyk Chopin’s Museum?
Yes, of course. I have visited the Museum for the first time during April qualifications. This time I have visited it for three times! The exhibition is so rich and arranged in so interesting way that every time I feel I haven’t spent enough time there.
Do you come from a family of musicians?
No. My parents played the piano in their childhood. My husband also used to be a pianist. I was raised in a family where everybody loves music very much, they respect music. I think this is the most important thing we share.
